FIFA has unveiled the timetable of its delayed bidding process for the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has planned for a 40-team tournament to be decided upon by October.
Soccer's world governing body said it would consider giving the green light to joint bids and review a rule which currently allows a continent to stage the tournament every eight years.
FIFA also said that the bidding process was resuming and that the host of the 2026 World Cup will be chosen in May 2020 - with the congress, not the council, electing the winner.
The process was postponed in June due to the corruption scandal centering around the attribution of the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 finals to Qatar.
In the meantime, FIFA has revealed that the bidding process will take place in four steps, with a consultation phase between now and May 2017, "enhanced phases for bid preparation" between June 2017-December 2018, and an evaluation of candidacies between January 2019 - February 2020.
